Tubing Conveyed Perforating
This is a system where casing guns are deployed down-hole on tubings. Detonation is activated by mechanical impact or hydraulic means.
The perforation is often done in underbalance conditions, however with simultaneous injection of proppant to enhance near-well bore conductivity, perforating can be done in extreme conditions.
The gun consists of scalloped hollow-carrier casings that house the charge tube, the charges and primacord which direct the train of detonation.
The detonating devices or firing heads are of two basic types:
- Impact-actuated firing device
- Pressure-actuated firing device
The accessories include but are not limited to:
- Debris barrier, which blocks pipe or tubing debris from falling on and blocking off the firing pin, and serves as a production vent.
- Impact-actuated vent which is a tool that is used when the need for a closed string BHA arises.

These details allow for designs that optimize the performance of the well, taking into consideration casing and reservoir characteristics.
ADVANTAGES
- It makes for shortest possible completion time
- It allows for immediate perforation clean up
- It has the ability to perforate long or multiple intervals in a single trip
- Eliminates ballout/breakdown
- Reduces stimulation costs
- Safety is assured as controlled well conditions prevail during perforation
- It performs efficiently in highly deviated wells
- Perforating and testing can be achieved in one trip
APPLICATIONS
- Completion formations with high permeability (at least 5 to 10 millidarcies), low bottom hole pressure, and near-well bore damage/high skin factors
- Completions where underlying water or overlying gas cap precludes hydraulic fracturing
- Pre-fracturing evaluation in formations with marginal permeability and reservoirs where water content might be excessive
